The Algorithm

How the FLAMES Calculation Works

The FLAMES result is based on a consistent, step-by-step mathematical process not randomness. Here is exactly how it works.

Enter Both Names

Type the two names you want to test. Only alphabetic letters are counted spaces and special characters are ignored, exactly as in the original paper game.

Cancel Common Letters

Each letter that appears in both names is crossed out simultaneously. For example, if both names share the letter "A", one "A" from each name is cancelled out. Our calculator visualises these as letter chips so you can see exactly what was removed.

Count the Remaining Letters

Add up all letters that were not cancelled from either name. This total is the step size used in the next phase of the calculation.

Eliminate Through FLAMES

Starting from F, count through F-L-A-M-E-S using your total as the step. Each time the count lands on a letter, eliminate it and restart counting from the next remaining letter. Repeat until only one letter stands that is your result.
